Sculptra® Is it worth it for impoving skin laxity, skin quality and thickness? Everything you need to know.
As we age, our skin loses elasticity and starts to become lax. In addition to skin laxity, ageing can also lead to a loss of skin quality and thickness, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, and a dull complexion.
Some people want drastic, immediate results from aesthetic procedures, and there are several cosmetic treatments available that do this, however Sculptra® has gained popularity as a non-surgical option that can restore volume and lift to the face, as well as improve skin quality and thickness for those who are looking for more gradual, natural-looking results.
What is Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is made from a synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is slowly absorbed. Poly-L-lactic acid has been used safely for decades in dissolvable stitches and as a facial injectable since 1999.This product is different to hyaluronic acid dermal fillers because it gradually and subtly corrects facial wrinkles and folds. Sculptra® targets the underlying causes of facial ageing. It begins to work within the deep dermis, where your skin’s structure is reinforced. As the poly-l-latic acid is absorbed, collagen production is stimulated. Collagen is a protein in the dermis that gives structure to the skin, and provides the foundation for the retention of skin laxity and volume. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness to your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that have depleted over time.
How is Sculptra® administered?
The Sculptra® injection procedure should take around 45 minutes to complete, and it’s performed in a comfortable clinic setting. To begin the procedure, your provider will first mark out some precise injection points on the face. Sculptra® is mixed with lidocaine (numbing agent) and water for injection then injected into the deep dermis with a cannula. At the end of the procedure, the treatment area will be massaged to ensure that the Sculptra® has been distributed evenly.
In order to obtain and maintain optimal results of your Sculptra® treatment, an ongoing series of sessions will be required, each spaced 4 weeks apart. The amount of repeat sessions required will differ from patient to patient and depends on the full degree of your loss of volume. Typically speaking, the majority of patients require somewhere in the region of between 2 to 6 Sculptra® treatments.
Who is a good candidate for Sculptra®?
You may be a good candidate for Sculptra® if you:
Sculptra® is not appropriate for use around the mid face areas, such as the mouth and nose, if you are looking to improve these areas, there are other options that are available
How Long Does Sculptra® Last?
One treatment of Sculptra® can last well over a year depending on the patient’s absorption rate. Studies have shown for patients with moderate to severe volume loss who have had an average of three injection sessions over a few months, results can last more than two years. Results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks and usually take three months to reach full effect.
Is Sculptra® really worth it?
Sculptra® is an FDA-approved injectable product that is used to reduce the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles on your face. This is a very effective treatment, and there is ample scientific evidence showing that this product provides long-lasting, noticeable results.
I would like to share my own results in the picture below. You can see a definite improvement in skin texture, and wrinkles and folds in the pre-auricular area and along the jawline. Also there is increased fullness in my temples and cheeks. The after picture was taken 1 month after the 4th treatment.
